Guerilla Produce

Our two most prolific veggie patch producers have actually been things that have sprouted all by themselves. The first being the pumpkin vines that grew from some of our compost leavings. We have so many pumpkins now that I'm either going to have to make a hell of a lot of pumpkin soup, or find loving homes for them.

(And there's another one upstairs in the kitchen!)

Another surprise package has been the roma tomato plant that sprouted in our rainforest patch. It's not even vaguely close to the veggie garden so I have no idea how it arrived where it is. Regardless, this is the happiest tomato plant I've ever seen. I always thought that tomatoes were difficult to grow in Winter, but obviously this one didn't get the memo ... it's going gangbusters! We haven't bought tomatoes for several months and it's looking like we won't have to for several more.

I've been attempting to stake it now that it's gotten so large and tangled. There's been a bit of attrition because I'm not all that patient at untangling it and the chooks have also been taxing us the odd unripe one here and there. These photos in no way document the full extent of the masses of as yet unripe tomatoes just hanging about. And it's still flowering!

Oh my! What a wonderful blog. My daughter Heather's blog is 'Grow It, Eat It', and I linked here from your comment. Your photos are so inspiring.
