A little corny ...

I guess I should apologise ... first for the title of this, my 50th post, and secondly for my prolonged absence. It's just that not much has been happening recently. I'm waiting for the boy and a few minions to move our bathtub and our borrowed kitchen upstairs so I can paint them. I was all geared up last weekend to get the bath painted and it just didn't eventuate. Thankfully, all shall be remedied tomorrow. My parentals are coming down to give us a hand (in exchange for advice on and assistance with construction of a cat run at their house) and I fully expect to have some exciting things to post about.

Anyway, on to the reason for the odd title for this post. Well, our little crop of soil retaining sunflowers has just begun sprouting corn! The boy says from past experience that it'll all be fairly stunted and probably inedible, but I'm still excited. I can't wait to get started on a veggie patch when we move in, and our 'fairly stunted and probably inedible' corn is giving me some serious inspiration!

The crop.

We've had some self seeded gerberas pop up along the side of the driveway and in some of the piles of rubble. Apparently (by his own admission), our new neighbour Kevin has been raiding these little beauties for his own garden!

We ducked out yesterday to pick up some new dowels for our verandah rails. The handrails we have at the moment are very low, and I've been worried that someone could fall over at any moment. The boy wanted to keep them as they are, because they're quite unusual and an original feature of the house, but I've put my foot down. I don't think I could live with myself if anything happened, so we've come to an agreement ... keep the original rails, but increase the height of the dowels (and therefore the rails themselves) to 'modern standards' so I can stop worrying. Once we'd made that decision though, I started worrying about our chances of getting dowels the right thickness. The existing ones are 32mm diameter and I've never seen them that thick before. Ever resourceful, the boy tracked a supplier down and off we went to pick them up.

Dowel heaven!

A beautiful mix of Australian hardwood timbers.
